Excursion to the Zoroastrian “Ateshgah” the temple of the fire-worshipers (XVII)

 

Excursion to the Zoroastrian “Yanardag”. It’s the Magic Burning Mountain (a place where exists the fuel gases).

An Exciting journey to one of the most beautiful regions of Azerbaijan – Mountainous-Shirvan!

Excursion departure with active ways of movement in the North-Western region along the route: Baku – Maraza (radial excursion of 5 km to the medieval mausoleum) – Shamakhi – Muganli pass – Gabala / village Vandam (Ls. the route is about 245 km). In the route of extensive travel and tour information, "photo-stop" inspection and visit to:

Rock the mausoleum "Diri Baba" (1402).

Panarama of mountains Niyaldag range of the greater Caucasus with Muganli pass.

Visiting of “Azer ILme”  Carpet Weaving Center.  You will visit the dye workshop, here you can see how yarns are colored using plant-based dyes using traditional Azerbaijani methods and the  weaving workshops. The carpets are woven using special knives with hooked tips, hive (hammer comb), and scissors reflecting ancient traditions. Here is the biggest carpet gallery, which you can also buy.

Nizami Street ( Shopping street).  The center of Baku city, walking street with architectural buildings  ( period XIX- beginning XX c.) and Nizami Gancavi monument. Here you can see many shops of wear, traditional souvenirs and etc.

Based on a vast experience of Italian experts, ASPI AGRO LLC revives the art of winemaking in the area with unique climatic conditions, where the art of wine-making was flourishing in ancient times – in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, in the valley of Savalan. After a thorough analysis of soil and climate, conducted by Italian experts, vines for  vineyards were provided by Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo company, a world leader in the production of seedlings.

 

Wines “Savalan” are produced under the guidance of highly qualified Italian engineers – Mr. Daniel D’Andrea and Ms. Eliza Vagnoni. Testing of wine is carried out by an expert from Europe, Mr. Ermanno Murari.

Excursion to the state reserve Gobustan.

 

       60 km to the south of Baku there is one of the world's largest collections of ancient rock paintings - there are more than 4,000 petroglyphs here. The Gobustan State Historical and Artistic Reserve can also see the sites of the first people, remnants of a large prehistoric cromlech and other evidence about the inhabitants of the region of the Stone Age and subsequent periods. The subject of interest of tourists is also a stone slab with a Latin inscription dating from the 1st century AD. e., left by the XII Roman legion of Emperor Domitian, which testifies to the presence of this legion here. The cultural landscape of the Gobustan rock paintings is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Excursion “Ateshgah - Temple of Fire-worshipers” - Yanar Dag.

 

      The fire temple “Ateshgah” in the village of Surakhani, a pentagonal complex with an open courtyard and a temple-altar in the center, which was a place of pilgrimage for fire worshipers. The temple of eternal fire Ateshgah is the real Azerbaijani exotic place. Almost all over the world know about him. In the former cells, where pilgrims from all over the world stayed, the museum’s expositions containing many unique authentic exhibits are now located. In its present form, the temple was built in the XVII-XVIII centuries.

    A visit to Yanar Dag (“Burning Mountain”) is another unique object in the ancient land of lights. Natural eternal flame, burning since ancient times on the hillside. A meter flame about ten meters wide.

Arrival in the mountain village Lagich.

The village of Lagich, built in the 5th century AD e. in the canyon of the Girdimanchay River (Upper Caucasus), is an original monument of the town planning and architectural art of antiquity. This medieval town with cobbled streets and squares is one of the most famous handicraft and shopping centers in the Caucasus and beyond. Here they make products from copper, leather, chasing, skillful potters and woodcarvers work. And today there are about a dozen workshops where hereditary blacksmiths make various household items in front of astonished tourists.

 

Moving on to Sheki

Excursion program in the town of Sheki and its surroundings:

Acquaintance with the restored early medieval Albanian Christian church (I-IV. VII-IX. XVI-XIX centuries) / - "Mother of Eastern Churches" in the village of Kish (this temple was visited by the world-famous Norwegian traveler-anthropologist Tur Heyerdal, next to the temple there is bust). The history of the emergence of the church is associated with the history of the spread of Christianity in Caucasian Albania. The presence of historical sources of information about the construction of the church by the Apostle Elisha is an irrefutable evidence of the apostolic beginning of the oldest Albanian independent church in the Caucasus.

A visit to one of the unique masterpieces of oriental architecture, a historical and architectural monument of the 18th century - the Summer Palace of the Sheki’s khans (the residence of local medieval rulers) with unique wall frescoes and stained glass windows "shebeke". One stained glass window was going on for 5-6 months. In the 1st quarter meters they contain from 3000 to 7000 different parts and patterns, created without glue and nails using a special solution, the composition of which is still unknown.

Acquaintance with the exposition of the local museum of folk art and craft production, located in the medieval Albanian round Christian temple.

 

Lunch at the restaurant "Yukhary Caravanserai" of the XVIII century

 

A visit to the shops and workshops of artisans-familiarization with the work of an artisan for the manufacture of national "shebeke" - openwork oriental window glass windows, covers and lattices, a workshop for the manufacture of Sheki’s baklava.

Leaving for a tour to Absheron peninsula.​

Ateshgah - the Fire Temple is situated  in the Surakhani suburb of Baku. It was built on land where natural gas was burned eternally by Zoroastrian believers, who travelled from the province of Multan in India to worship. It is believed that, these ancient fires have given Azerbaijan its name which, according to some researches, means ''Land of Fire''.

Visiting the well - preserved ancient castles of Absheron Peninsula of the 12th - 13th centuries and located further from Absheron Peninsula. There are several fine medieval castles - one is in Amirajan and two in Mardakyan - apparently built for defense by the Shirvan’s Shahs in the 14-th century.

Day 3.

Guba is located on the north-eastern flanks of hills of the Shahdag mountain belonging to the Greater Caucasus mountains at the altitude of 600 m above sea level on the bank of Gudial river at the distance of 168 km from Baku. Due to the favorable location and rich infrastructure Guba district is one of the favorite tourist destinations.

Visiters since long time ago have chosen Gyachresh place where you can relax in the shady woods.

Guba is world famous with carpets which are being made here from ancient times.  Visiting of master craft of Carpet weaving. Visiting of historical monuments as the mosque of Sakine Khanum, Juma mosque, mausoleum of the 16th century, ancient eastern-type baths, village of Krasnaya Sloboda, which is home to one of the largest communities of Mountain Jews in the world.

Guba differs for its amazingly rich cuisine because of the variety of nations living there - such as Azerbaijanis, Lezgis, Tats, Khinalugs and so on.  Lunch in the restaurant with national cuisine

 

Tengealtin gorge, where the turbulent river Velvelichai runs, the famous Afurdzhin waterfall which is included into the list of “Monuments of Azerbaijan Nature”.

Khinalug Tour

 

Khinalug (Xınalıq) is the highest, most remote and isolated village in Azerbaijan and among the highest in the Caucasus (elevation of 2,350 m) and amongst the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. It is considered as one of country’s premiere destination with beautiful landscape and interesting village. Khinalug ceased to be isolated from the world, although still remaining a unique place. In the year 2007, Khinalug village was declared a state historical-architectural and ethnographic reserve of Azerbaijan by UNESCO. The population of the village is a separate ethnic group. They have their own language, nowhere in the world besides them no one speak this language. Khinalıqs also preserved their ancient customs and traditions as own language

Departure to Lankaran.

Lankaran - amazingly beautiful port city, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea, almost on the border with Iran, the administrative center of the Lankaran region of Azerbaijan. This city is an ancient southern pearl and one of the most beautiful corners of the republic. Lankaran is incomparably beautiful with its original architecture, historical buildings of the 8th - 19th centuries and rich cultural heritage. The city lies in the subtropics, which makes it one of the best spa resorts in the country.

Lankaran is located 270 km from Baku on the shore of the Caspian Sea and is surrounded by the subtropical Talysh mountains. On the way we will make several stops. The first one will be in the Shirvan reserve, famous for its herds of gazelles (a kind of roe deer). Also in the national park you can see the steppe wild boar, nutria, hares, turtles - residents of the steppes of the Shirvan lowland.

We will continue our tour and stop in the city of Masalli.

Masalli is  famous for their hot springs and therapeutic baths based on them. Guests will have the opportunity to visit the sources on the territory of the Istisu sanatorium, to visit the source Janar-Bulag (fiery source), Lake Vilash, as well as the famous Yardymli waterfalls.

Further we will continue our trip to the Hyrcanic Reserve and Khanbulan Lake in it.  Hiking in relict forests of these places. The Lankaran region is unique for its flora and fauna - an iron tree grows here, which is found only in this zone.

Because of subtropical climate zone, Lenkoran is a country of citrus and tea.  Therefore, visiting of Tea plantation and the tea ceremony with lemon is the most important part of our acquaintance with Lenkoran.

Day 4.

On the way visiting of historic – art reserve Gobustan (65 km. from Baku). Acquaintance with the archaeological exposition of the museum, survey of inhabitants and acquaintance with the lifestyle of the people of an epoch of the “Stone Age” (7-8 thousand years B. C).

Excursion to the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum. At the time of establishing, it was the only museum that was dedicated to the art of carpet weaving. The main purpose of the creation of the museum was to store, research, and demonstrate unique examples of the carpet weaving art, which are the Azerbaijan’s national heritage.

Excursion “Ateshgah - Temple of Fire-worshipers” - Yanar Dag.

 

      The fire temple “Ateshgah” in the village of Surakhani, a pentagonal complex with an open courtyard and a temple-altar in the center, which was a place of pilgrimage for fire worshipers. The temple of eternal fire Ateshgah is the real Azerbaijani exotic place. Almost all over the world know about him. In the former cells, where pilgrims from all over the world stayed, the museum’s expositions containing many unique authentic exhibits are now located. In its present form, the temple was built in the XVII-XVIII centuries.

   60 km from Baku there are some of the largest collections of ancient rock carvings in the world - there are more than 4,000 petroglyphs here. In Gobustan State Historical and Artistic Reserve you can also see the standing first people, the remains of a large prehistoric land and other evidence of the region of the Stone Age and periods. It is also a stone slab with a Latin inscription dating from the 1st century AD. e., the remaining XII Roman legion of Emperor Domitian, which testifies to the presence of this legion here. The cultural landscape of the Gobustan rock paintings is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The most common unique mud volcanoes of the world are located exactly in the list. More than 45% of all mud volcanoes are concentrated on the territory of our country, while most of them are located on the Absheron Peninsula.

Volcanoes are found different: high and low, griffins and buried, underwater and underground. Each of them has its own character and chemical composition.

 

A rock with a Latin inscription that tells of staying in Gobustan in the 1st c. n e. Roman Centuria: "Time of Emperor Domitian Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Lucius Julius Maximus, Centurion XII of the Lightning-Fast Legion."

Visit to the tomb of the Bibi-Heybat mosque. The mosque is the tomb where the ashes of the descendant of the Prophet Muhammad rest. Built in the second unit of the XIII century, the mosque was destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936 and restored in the 90s of the XX century. Acquaintance with the restored early medieval Albanian Christian church (I-IV. VII-IX. XVI-XIX centuries) / - "Mother of Eastern Churches" in the village of Kish (this temple was visited by the world-famous Norwegian traveler-anthropologist Tur Heyerdal, next to the temple there is bust). The history of the emergence of the church is associated with the history of the spread of Christianity in Caucasian Albania. The presence of historical sources of information about the construction of the church by the Apostle Elisha is an irrefutable evidence of the apostolic beginning of the oldest Albanian independent church in the Caucasus.

A visit to one of the unique masterpieces of oriental architecture, a historical and architectural monument of the 18th century - the Summer Palace of the Sheki’s khans (the residence of local medieval rulers) with unique wall frescoes and stained glass windows "shebeke". One stained glass window was going on for 5-6 months. In the 1st quarter meters they contain from 3000 to 7000 different parts and patterns, created without glue and nails using a special solution, the composition of which is still unknown.

Acquaintance with the exposition of the local museum of folk art and craft production, located in the medieval Albanian round Christian temple.

Arrival in the mountain village Lagich.

The village of Lagich, built in the 5th century AD e. in the canyon of the Girdimanchay River (Upper Caucasus), is an original monument of the town planning and architectural art of antiquity. This medieval town with cobbled streets and squares is one of the most famous handicraft and shopping centers in the Caucasus and beyond. Here they make products from copper, leather, chasing, skillful potters and woodcarvers work. And today there are about a dozen workshops where hereditary blacksmiths make various household items in front of astonished tourists.

Continuation of the excursion “Ganja-Cultural Center of the East”: a visit to one of the oldest mausoleums of Ganja, Jomard Gassab, built during the time of Caliph Ali Talib (656-661); City Baths “Chokak Hammam”; City Juma Mosque (Shah Abbas mosque of the XVI century), Javad Khan mausoleum - XIX century. Departure to the suburbs.

Visit to the former German settlements Annenfeld (Shamkir) and Yelenendorf (Khanlar), built by German colonists from Baden-Württemberg, who were resettled in this region under Empress Catherine II.

Excursion to the lake "Goygol". Lake Goygol is located on the territory of the Goygol state natural reserve. The lake was formed because of a devastating earthquake that occurred in 1139, because of which the top of Mount Kapaz collapsed in the gorge of the Agsu River. The formed dam is the famous Goygol lake with beautiful nature, clear water. Overall, 19 lakes are located on the territory of Goygol, 7 of which belong to large lakes.
